Chevy Chase Houses for Sale
Chevy Chase Living
Although you may think the actor Chevy Chase was named after the Chevy Chase, DC, neighborhood or vice versa, the name “Chevy Chase” originates in an area in northern England. In 1725, Lord Baltimore granted Colonel Joseph Belt land in what is now Chevy Chase, and the Colonel chose that name for his farm. The area stayed mostly rural until 1886, when developers began to purchase land along Connecticut Avenue and devise plans for a multi-neighborhood “streetcar suburb.” In 1908, the first home was built in Chevy Chase on Oliver Street, and many followed, mostly chosen from the pages of the Sears Roebuck catalog or other catalog home builders. There was a regulation that homes had to cost at least $5,000 on main streets or $3,000 on side streets.

Today, the original double-lots have been filled in by more recently built structures, so the area has an eclectic feel, with contemporary homes placed side-by-side with historic mansions. The beautiful, historic homes and magnificent trees that line the streets of this neighborhood make its residents feel lucky to have found this Eden in the heart of the city. Its exclusive, upscale atmosphere makes it popular among prestigious denizens of the city, both new and established.

Chevy Chase is also a popular upscale shopping district, and its Mazza Gallerie hosts stores such as Neiman Marcus, Williams Sonoma and Saks Fifth Avenue Men’s Store. Near the Maryland border and just above the Mazza Gallerie are upscale boutiques, such as Jimmy Choo, Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton and Chanel. There are also many other stores, restaurants and places of interest in the area, such as Chevy Chase Gallery, the Parthenon Restaurant, Circle Yoga and the Avalon Theater.

There are also several organizations that residents enjoy being involved in such as the Chevy Chase Citizens Association, which collaborates on matters of public interest, such as planting trees in the community, reviving open spaces and planning community events. Other organizations include the Chevy Chase Lions Club, Friends of the Chevy Chase DC Library and Friends of Chevy Chase Park.
